Pineapples are the New Bird

Put a bird pineapple on it – I’m calling it guys – pineapples are now trending. As I mentioned before – I caught the ‘Pineapples-are-so-cute-Everything-I-buy-should-be-pinapple-related’ disease in this post. Check out these pineapple pins decor that is confirming the trend.

I really love those Brass Pineapples – but looking at them on Etsy, they are a little pricy, ranging from $90 – 189! But I found this cute trivet for $13

DIY’s that are Actually Cool

DIY – the idea always seems awesome and then I stock pile a million pins on Pinterest, but then never make time to create my glorious pins.  And it always seems DIY pins are holiday oriented. WELL GUESS WHAT? Here are some DIY pins that have nothing to do with anything except that they are actually cool (and home design-ish) and I am determined to MAKE one of these… which one should I do?

Wall Stencils – Not for the Weak

I have been wanting to paint my dining room since I moved into my apartment two years ago. But it always seemed like ugh…. I don’t have the time or energy to tackle such a project. But with a recent surge of adrenaline and inspiration, it was time to get painting!

With my BF’s blessing I chose to paint the walls, ‘Light French Gray,’ how fancy. I moved all the bric-a-brac all over the apartment and got to it…

First day was straight up painting french gray. A few days later was the stencil project…I went onto Cutting Edge Stencils and I was really digging this stencil:

But then I watched this tutorial with my favorite girl, Sherry Petersik, and took her suggestion of going with a more ‘organic’ shape. And what is not more organic than a peacock feather?

When it was delivered I was thinking “oooh I’ll do the entire room” but after some discussions with my Mom and my BF’s utter objection (gotta compromise!) to the entire room being covered in peacock feathers, I went with just an accent wall. I used Martha Stewart Stencil adhesive and painters tape to help keep the stencil flat on the wall, in some smaller parts the paint started to dry on the feather tips making it a little chunky looking but nothing too bad. The entire process for one wall took about 5 hours. Because of those smaller feather tips I wasn’t using a roller, I used a sponge tip brush. Here’s the stenciling my process:

I love the way it turned out! Exactly what that room was missing. Especially since its the wall you see while sitting in the living room, I’m just madly in love with that damn wall now! Overall it was a  fun process – but definitely block off a chunk of time and maybe have some wine. Now I just have to put everything back together…

Target Strikes again…

Target has done it again. It has added more items to its stock that will make me forget I went into the store for conditioner and end up spending $100 on things that I need

Happy Anniversary!

HomeMade Modern…DIY Fail

I found the most amazing website – HomeMade Modern, a few months ago and have been dying to try one of their DIY projects (I am sucker for a good modern DIY). And this weekend, I got real adventurous and went to Home Depot (for those of you in New England – you understand that trekking out in this weather basically made me an arctic explorer) and picked up some Quickrete and tried to make these:

While I was intricately cutting the patterns and gluing them together my boyfriend and his friend looked and me said, “But what plant is going to fit inside of there?” So I decided to turn them into candle holders because I obviously do not have enough…

The Quickrete came in a $7 bag, directions were simple, you just add water and mix up in. The directions suggested 1/2 cup – but looking back I wish I added more because it was a little dry and lumpy. This image below was after I made my holes with an old screw driver and mid way through the drying process.

At this point I started to have my doubts… I cut the paper molds off the cement after it dried for a couple hours – and it was soooo lumpy! I only took a picture with a few of them because the other ones look like I found some rocks outside with a perfect hole in them : ( I also tried to give it a ‘dip dye’ look and spray paint the top with a silver chrome color – this was a DIY FAIL.

In conclusion – I needed to add more water and this DIY project will not defeat me! I will try it again this week when I will probably be snowed in…
